Each scale model Planet (or Moon) if viewed at its relevant scale distance, is seen at the same angular size as the real object in the sky, eg. the Moon at 6.9 mm dia. viewed at 81 Cm. is seen as the same angular size as the real moon in the sky........Ever wondered how big the Earth looks from the Moon? just reverse the View.......

The Model sun ,(Were it an actual Ball and not in a Box) At 2.75 Mtrs.Dia. seen from 300 Mtrs. away ,would appear the same angular size as the real sun in the Sky.....and also the Moon ,(as observed above)........ Proven during an Eclipse , the Sun and Moon appear the same size)

At this scale, Proxima Centauri (the nearest Star, 4.2 light years Dist.) would be 80,0000 Km. away.

 


My real interest is Astronomy, but I am also a great 'fan' of spaceflight,
both manned and robotic. I have always enjoyed making things, and have made
several telescopes for use with my Astronomy, I played a great part in the
design and construction of the Observatory and half metre Telescope
at TBGS

I also build highly detailed scale models of factual spacecraft, and some
science fiction stuff. Most of my models are, scratch built, that is that
they are not kits, but are made from 'junk' and materials other than
plastic. I do a lot of research, then make a scale drawing and construct
from these,

I currently work in an educational establishment, and have given many talks
to clubs and societies on astronomy. The Model planets seen here were made
by me to aid the visualisation of the size and scale of the solar system and
universe

 I have made a scale Model, of all the planets in our Solar System, including
all of the larger moons.......The Model is of a scale that 1 centimetre =
5000 Kilometres. I constructed the 'Model Solar System' as a Teaching
aid...on the principal that "if a picture equals a thousand words" then a
scale Model should be worth a few more... The larger models are made of a
low density polystyrene, sanded to shape and size, and covered with paper
'mache'. The smaller planets and Moons, are made from high density
polystyrene and sanded to size then painted.

I have gone to great pains to produce accurate surface detail, colour,and
features on all of the planets and moons, even the smallest ....

I have made a model of the sun to the same scale.... At this scale the Model
of the sun would be a ball 2.75 mtrs.(9Ft.) in dia....Far too big to Handle
and Store..there is an Illusion of a 'Ball' in a Science Museum, made by
using a T.V. screen and Four Mirrors... I adapted the Idea to fit a 'Virtual
Sun'(9ft.Dia.) into a box only (660mm)26 inches square...

Here's my chance to drop in a bit of 'astronomy education'
